青山学院大学大学院国際マネジメント研究科（青山ビジネススクール：ABS）の在学生及び修了生の4名が、このほど開講された米国ポートランド州立大学の地域活性化シビックエンゲージメント履修証明プログラム（正式名称：「米国ポートランド州立大学まちづくり人材育成プログラム）に参加し（受講生総数15名）、現地視察やグループディスカッションなどを経て多くの学びを得ました。

このメンバーは宮副謙司教授が担当する科目「地域活性化のマーケティング」「地方創生実践論-神山プロジェクト」「シビックエンゲージメント・プロジェクト」などを履修した学生で、自ら地域活性化やSDGs・シビックエンゲージメント活動の実践に向け、さらに高い意識・意欲をもって、このプログラムに参加しました。

6日間のプログラムでは、ポートランド州立大学のシビックエンゲージメント領域の専門家の先生方によるレクチャーやワークショップ、現地で長年地域活性化に取り組んできたシニアフェローや地域行政担当者からの事例解説、さらに現在進行中の最新の街づくりプロジェクトの現地視察し担当者から直接に、その考え方や取り組み方を学びました。

また日本からあるいは米国国内から集まった受講生（行政関係者・実務家・大学関係者など）とも交流を深め、日本での地域活性化やシビックエンゲージメント活動のあり方を議論し、今後への示唆を得ました。

プログラムに参加した宮副謙司教授のコメント
今回の研修では、都市中心部や郊外都市、さらに近隣地域（ネイバーフッド）など様々な立地、立場での街づくり・シビックエンゲージメント活動を視察できました。そしてそこで会う方は、それぞれが独自の社会課題を認識し、その解決に向けて様々に施策を創意工夫し実践していることが十分に理解できました。まさに「シビックエンゲージメント」（社会参画）という言葉をこれほど毎日いつも聞くとは！と驚くとともに、ABSのMBA課程におけるソーシャルリーダーの人材養成や、青山学院大学シビックエンゲージメントセンターの考え方や手法（学部生の活動支援など）が間違っていないとの確信を強く感じました。

Four current students and graduates of Aoyama Business School: ABS participated in the recently launched Portland State University's Japanese Local Governance and Management Training Program 2025 (total of 15 participants), gaining valuable insights through on-site visits and group discussions.

Participants: Yamashita Kazuki (enrolled in the Evening Course for the 2024 academic year), Inagi Kenta, Tachikawa Masakazu, and Yaguchi Hideyuki (graduated from the Evening Course in March 2025)

These members are students who have taken courses taught by Professor Kenshi Miyazoe of ABS, such as “Marketing for Regional Revitalization,” “Practical Theory of Regional Revitalization - Kamiyama Project,” and “Civic Engagement Project.” They participated in this program with a high level of awareness and enthusiasm, aiming to put into practice regional revitalization, SDGs, and civic engagement activities.

Over the six-day program, they attended lectures and workshops by experts in the field of civic engagement from Portland State University, heard case studies from senior fellows and local government officials who have been engaged in regional revitalization efforts for many years, and visited ongoing urban development projects to learn directly from the project managers about their approaches and initiatives.

Additionally, we deepened exchanges with participants from Japan and the United States (including government officials, practitioners, and university staff), discussed approaches to regional revitalization and civic engagement activities in Japan, and gained insights for the future.

Comments from Professor Kenshi Miyazoe, who participated in the program
During this training program, we were able to observe urban development and civic engagement activities in various locations and contexts, including city centers, suburban cities, and neighboring areas (neighborhoods). We gained a deep understanding of how each person we met recognized their own unique social issues and creatively devised and implemented various measures to solve them. I was surprised to hear the term “civic engagement” so frequently every day! At the same time, I felt a strong sense of confidence that the approach to cultivating social leaders in the MBA program at ABS and the philosophy and methods of the Aoyama Gakuin University Civic Engagement Center (such as supporting undergraduate student activities) are on the right track.
